Bumper stickers: Ese and Fatoyinbo

In Nigeria, we can easily identify Christians by the bumper stickers on their car rears or windscreen. Judging from that, we have a lot of churches and fellowship centers and the leaders of such places are more reverred than God Himself. We have attributed so much power to men and women in the ministry that we have forgotten that  we all were created in the image of God and have been given the same mandate to dominate and rule.

Due to our laziness to study, which eventually spills over to everything around us and our need for ‘sharp sharp’ miracle, we are perishing in ignorance and thereby allowing some ‘self proclaimed’ prophets and pastors rule the day because we think they know God more than we do. We become gullible and end up as ‘bumper sticker’ christians as most of them are bumper sticker pastors as well.

That is the reason for bumper sticker church members and bumper sticker pastors. Initially, I did not want to talk about Ese and her pastor Fatoyinbo but when it started making airwaves, I could not keep quiet anymore.
First of all, there was no sexual abuse if Ese’s story actually happened. It was a mutual relationship in which both of them knew what was going to happen and allowed it to happen.
Secondly,  did she not stop to think of the effects her story will have on geninue christians, especially those who are struggling with their faith especially in cases of immorality? I call her a ‘type A’ bumper sticker church member because she doesn’t even know the sayings of Christ concerning dealing with issues in the church. I am sure that her bumper sticker pastor has never read 1 Corinthians 6 :1 to 20 to his congregation. Then she would have known that the deacons and elders in the church are not only there to bear the name but to deal with cases that involve believers. He too would have known that :
“Everything is permissible for me” —but not everything is beneficial. “Eveything is permissible for me— but I will not be mastered by anything. Food for the stomach and the stomach for food— but God will destroy them both. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord and the Lord for the body”… 1 Corinthians 6:12 – 13.

I don’t intend to cast stones at her nor the pastor. It would not change what has happened. However, I do know that sexual immorality is not to be boasted about (even when we think we want to right a wrong) and kiss and tell doesn’t help anyone either. It doesn’t make you not to commit the sin again. It is only a deep conviction, repentance and dependance on the Holy Spirit that can stop anyone from committing
a crime.

Also, judging from the undivided attention that Ese and pastor Fatoyinbo’s story has got, I wonder if it wasn’t mechanically induced.. like the babe went all out to play her game just to spite the body of Christ . Or is it the pastor playing his role as a self made god, and pulling a fast one on people? Or is it the devil hoodwinking us all and getting us busy for nothing?

Only God can tell . One thing I do know is that this is a wake up call for all that call on the name of Christ. Let us not run this race in vain. It is high time we stopped sitting on the fence. If you are for God, please be for Him, if not live your life the way you want but please let’s stop playing with fire. Remove the cloak of laziness. Pick up your bible and study for yourself so that the next time another pastor Fatoyinbo shows up, you will put him in his place , which is under your feet and not between your legs.
